–especially if you are a woman or a member of a minority. There is a projected shortage of scientists and engineers. Therefore, new strategies are being proposed for colleges to work harder to offer more students science learning opportunities.

Efforts among national higher education associations and science education groups are advancing the idea of enhancing post-secondary science education beyond helping students to augmenting institutional programs and structures. They believe an interconnection among post-secondary institutions is the way to go. Schools that offer strong science programs, many science courses, large science faculties, and grant research opportunities are encouraged to allow more exchange and transfer of students from surrounding institutions whose programs are not as extensive such as community colleges, small colleges, and publicly-funded universities.

This effort is seen as a much-needed outreach that can make the path to science and engineering degrees easier by leveling opportunities through sharing resources.
