In the spring of 2012 MIT will be launching MITx,  a new online learning initiative. MITx will be offered on an interactive platform that will allow for student-to-student communication and for online labs.  Now anyone can now take course work from MIT.

Already MIT offers OpenCourseWare, which is a free online publication of all MIT’s undergraduate and graduate course materials, but with MITx students can learn as they go and demonstrate their knowledge of what they are studying.

MITx will be used to supplement on-campus work but will also be available for other colleges, for K-12 schools, and for any person who is interested.

Although one can not earn an MIT degree from this online learning program, they can acquire a certificate of completion from MITx for a modest fee.
