If you are looking to better your future, graduate school can be a great first step. This being said, deciding whether or not to attend graduate school isn’t always an easy decision to make. Not only do you have to apply and be accepted, but you have to be able to afford tuition and living expenses as well.

Many graduate students end up taking such a large loan that it takes them years to pay them back. These students don’t always consider that the larger the loan they take, the more they will have to pay back. However, there are other options that do not require you to take a large loan, and does not require you to spend much of your own money.

Grants

Grants are great if you want to decrease the cost of your doctoral level college, and are awarded depending on financial need. Some grants are available to students in specific fields of study, while others are available to certain people groups, such as a religious community of a particular gender. Schools and colleges may also have internal grants specifically for their students. You are only eligible if you apply though, so apply early and regularly to bolster your chance of being selected.

Fellowships

Fellowships are versatile, as some can be utilized at different schools or colleges, while others are issued by certain colleges. Fellowships also range in varieties in terms of the amount they offer, and may have different eligibility standards.

Not everyone can pay their way through grad school, and just because they cannot, does not mean they should be deprived of it. The options mentioned above are some great options for taking pressure off of your financial situation, allowing you to focus on your studies.
